5 Reasons to see Captain America the Winter Soldier NOW.

5 Reasons to see Captain America the Winter Soldier NOW

Review by Timothy Austin

Captain America The Winter Soldier is the sequel to the original 2011 film and features the return of Chris Evans as the iconic Marvel Comics superhero Steve Rogers aka Captain America who must now take on a new villain, the Winter Soldier, who not only brings destruction and death, but also a painful and shocking secret from Rogers' past.  What we get is a high intensity action-adventure with all the intrigue of a James Bond film and the jaw dropping special effects of 2012's Avengers.  Here are 5 reasons to see it NOW:
1.
     1. Nick Fury finally gets the fight scene he deserves.  The Captain America sequel delivers on all levels.  We finally get to see Samuel L. Jackson kick butt as Nick Fury in a rip-roaring action sequence that allows Jackson to engage in real hand to hand combat that we haven’t seen from the character since ‘The Avengers’.  Without divulging any spoilers, Nick Fury comes face to face with the enemy force threatening his Shield Agency and what we get is a stunning sequence in which Jackson’s physical prowess is put on full display.  The shocks never end as Fury fights for his life in a truly jaw dropping and violent action scene. Casting Jackson as Nick Fury is one of the most inspired casting decisions in recent memory and The Winter Soldier finally showcases how terrific Jackson is as the one-eyed hero.

2.
     2. Steve Rogers and Black Widow have Amazing Chemistry – Hinted at in ‘The Avengers’, Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Natalia Romanova aka Black Widow have a strong sexual tension sprinkled with naughty banter that is amazing to watch.  The banter is cranked up to the top notch in the Winter Soldier as the two characters try every avenue to deny their strong attraction; what is most interesting about the on-screen couple is that they are opposites with Captain America being the all-American boy- next- door while the Black Widow exudes sex and forbidden romance aided well by her skin tight cat suit.  Even in their high energy action sequences the two characters demonstrate a strong physical chemistry with Scarlet Johansson and Chris Evans providing their best performances.

3.
      3. The Falcon soars!  I have been a fan of the Falcon character since discovering The Avengers comic book and I was hesitant about his appearance in the Captain America sequel since his metallic bird-like wings and ability to fly would call for massive, creative special effects.  The hero is also the first African-America superhero to appear in mainstream comics so a lot was riding on his first ever feature film appearance. They got it right!  Anthony Mackie, best known for his role in 8 Mile, is fantastic as Falcon providing the wise-cracking banter with Chris Evan’s Captain America that is on spot with what fans of the comic book expect; but what truly brought the character to life are the action sequences in which Falcon utilizes his wing pack for some truly jaw-dropping special effects.  As Falcon aids Captain America and the Black Widow to fight against the new enemy and the formidable Winter Soldier, the audience is treated to awe-inspiring flight sequences in which Falcon dodges everything from missiles to falling sky-scrapers.  What I particularly liked about the Falcon is the film makers’ ability to seamlessly blend the live-action stunt work by Mackie with computer generated special effects.  The Falcon’s sequences alone are well worth the ticket price.

4.
4.Chris Evans just keeps getting better.  When last have you seen an action-adventure in which the protagonist consistently proves why he’s the one you shouldn’t take your eyes off of? Like Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Evans as Captain America is truly inspired casting as the actor not only looks like the iconic hero but his physical aptitude on screen will take your breath away.  Another amazing achievement is that film makers relied on hand to hand combat as much as computer generated sequences which showcased Evans ability to take on all aspects of the physically demanding Captain America role.  Evans is a wonder to watch as he takes on his new foe, the Winter Soldier, and despite their battles being highly physical, the physiological ramifications of discovering the Winter Soldier’s real identity resonate well with an emotional performance by Evans.  The actor does the iconic hero justice once again.

5.
      5. You don’t have to be a fan of the series to enjoy Winter Soldier.  Despite never seeing a single Marvel or Avengers film, non-fans will salivate at the amazing action sequences, awe-inspiring special effects and tour de force acting.  Everyone in this film is at the top of their game; Scarlet Johansson is visually stunning as Black Window and her intense action sequences provide enough female empowerment to excite feminist groups for hundreds of years.  Veteran actor Robert Redford as the stalwart senior leader of Shield, Alexander Pierce, brings high intensity drama and intrigue and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier brings a heart-breaking humanity to the character yet terrifies with a truly foreboding presence during his violent action scenes.  The film is a well-packaged theoretical delight that no fan of action-adventures should miss.  It is indeed well worth the ticket price as the high-intense adventure is on-par with 2012’s ‘The Avengers’.

5 Reasons Noah is the Worst Movie of 2014

By Timothy Austin

Noah is the retelling of the Biblical story recorded in Genesis and re-teams Oscar winners Russell Crowe (Noah) and Jennifer Connelly (Naameh) from ‘A Beautiful Mind’.  While the film has been criticized for taking liberties with the well-known story of the great flood which destroyed the world, it is doubtful that audiences were fully prepared for the volume of liberties the film makers have taken with the primary story.  While the trailer promised an inspired epic, what I saw was a catastrophe possibly on par with the disaster the film so painfully fails to convincingly portray.

5. Bizarre Fantasy Creatures – I have no problem with film makers taking artistic liberties with Biblical stories.  This was done quite tastefully with Cecil B. Demille’s ‘The Ten Commandments’ starring Charlton Heston.  Few Christians or the average moviegoer will fault the movie for tiny additions to the Biblical telling of Moses; even the Moses-Nefertiti love storyline was not overdone to the point that it overshadowed the Biblical highpoints.  This is not the case with Noah.

From the opening montage you get the impression that the film makers are going for a more fantasy-like retelling of the  story.  This montage was the first indication that the movie was putrid; it included computer animation that seemed more suited for a low budget kid’s flick than an epic Biblical movie.  It included images of the temptation of Adam and Eve in Eden and the snake depicting the devil looked like it belonged more in the company of Jim Henson’s Muppets than a large-scale film.  At the end of the opening montage you half expect Miss Piggy to show up with the line ‘just kidding’.  Yes, it’s that bad.

This brings me to my biggest sore point with this film.  Following the poorly executed montage we are introduced to what appeared to be giant stone creatures, one of whom seemed to have a large hernia. I am no Biblical scholar but I am quite sure there are no glowing giant creatures made of stone in Genesis.  I was immediately shocked by the sudden appearance of these creatures, not because they were not in the Biblical story, but they seemed to belong more in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ rather than a film based on characters from the Bible.  When the stone giants started talking, I almost threw my pop-corn at the screen in utter disgust with the foolish plot addition.  We are provided with a brief explanation that the creatures are actually ‘Fallen Angels’ who disobeyed God and were punished by being turned into ‘living stone’.  Yes, that sequence in the film appears as foolish as my description indicates and seems more fitted for the CW series ‘Supernatural’.

The stone giants stick around for the first and second acts and even help Noah and his family to build the Ark.  These provides for more laughable fantasy sequences as the creatures, still sporting hernia-like appendages, build and even have a huge battle with the humans trying to get on the Ark.  I was waiting for James Earl Jones’ voice to come thundering through one of the creatures but alas they remain the most mind-numbing part of the film.

Other cringe-worthy fantasy creatures include a dog covered in what appeared to be scales rescued by Noah from hunters.  I am not sure what inspired the film makers to think that there were scale-covered dogs in Biblical times, but indeed a few minutes into the film you will see a badly animated CGI dog-like creature with scales.  There are also glowing rocks which Noah and his family use to make fire and glowing snake skin.  At one point the villain, Tubal-Cain (Ray Winstone) appears to be using the rocks to make fireworks; he shoots them into the sky and screams at God.  Yes, again it’s as bad as it sounds.   Thankfully the film makers have spared us the embarrassment of explaining the origin of these glowing rocks or this Noah would be officially categorised as a bad comedy.

4. Preposterous incest plot – Despite how disappointing the aforementioned sounds, nothing compares to the melodramatic plot for Noah and his family.  At some points it’s hard to digest that such an over-the-top story-line could have been created for a major motion picture since the scenarios seemed more suited for a Daytime soap opera.  These include everything from an obviously fake belly bump to Noah almost murdering his own grandchildren.  There is even a scene where the villain becomes a stowaway on the Ark and despite Noah and his family being at sea for what seems like months, no one discovers the stowaway until the final climatic fight.  The villain even plots to murder Noah with one of his own sons and all this happens as Noah becomes disillusioned with the idea that he and his family deserve to live, another painful and unnecessary diversion from the Biblical story.  However, the most baffling plot twist happens when Noah rescues and adopts a young girl at the beginning of the film, she blossoms into beautiful Emma Watson (Hermoine from the Harry Potter films) and she eventually marries one of Noah’s sons.  The other brothers refer to her as ‘sister’ and she obviously has a father-daughter relationship with Noah.  Hence the complete disgust when she eventually becomes pregnant for Noah’s son, not sure which one since at that point I was wishing for a gun to my head to escape frustration.  The incestuous sub-plot and the fact that the wives for Noah’s other sons were completely deleted from the story makes this one of the worst plots I have seen in recent memory.

3. Ear-splitting Soundtrack – Without a doubt music composer Clint Mansell does not understand subtlety and was given free reign by the producers of Noah since the music seems to distract from the visuals in almost every key scene.  As an avid soundtrack collector I am familiar with Mansell’s excellent work on ‘Requiem for a Dream’, but the music score for Noah is excessively bombastic and over-the-top.  The percussion section seemed to be working over time during the scene when the animals arrive; the music swells so loud you half expect the ‘Death Star’ to suddenly appear and John Williams’ Star Wars theme to blare through the speakers.   My air drums were on the verge of bleeding when the flood arrived and Mansell cranks up the drum section to deafening proportions.  What great modern composers James Horner, John Williams and Hans Zimmer have shown us is that subtle music can create the biggest results.  The opposite happens in Noah.

2. Disappointing visual effects – Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly obviously try their best with some of the corniest lines ever written for a large-scale film but their efforts are squandered by the less than spectacular visual effects.  By the time I suffered through the talking stone giants, Watson’s obviously fake baby bump and the Muppet snake (who shows up twice), when the flood finally comes it lasts all of three minutes and we basically see people being washed away and the Ark floating.  That’s it. There are no jaw-dropping moments or sequences of awe.  I have seen more interesting CGI effects in a Sci-Fi Channel Saturday afternoon movie.  The animals look painfully CGI, the drowning people barely register and at one point I wished they would have used some realistic CGI effects on Emma Watson’s awkward pregnant belly.

1. Russell Crowe’s Halle Berry inspired hair - The final act of the film is the most disappointing as Russell Crowe’s Noah is transformed from spear wielding warrior to ‘crazy mad geriatric ’.  I do not jest.  Crowe literally runs around the Ark for the entire final act screaming about killing his grandchildren since apparently his last son, which one I cannot remember since the nonsense was inducing a coma, was supposed to be the last man on Earth.  The obvious insensitivity to Genesis is only the tip of the ice-berg as the make-up artistes seemed to have a field day making Crowe appear more like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction than a Biblical hero.  What truly shocked me was Crowe’s hair cut in one of the final scenes since it instantly reminds you of one of Halle Berry’s wigs from the X-Men movies.  I kid you not.  Crowe appears with silver highlights as if he just walked out of a salon.  Russell Crowe is the greatest actor of our time and the fact that the writers could not provide him with a plot worthy of an actor of his calibre is truly the biggest disappointment of this film.  Crowe deserves better and so does the man he depicts.  Taking artistic liberties should be done to enhance a story not create talking stone giants.  As Crowe goes on his rampage at the end of the film, for one moment I hoped he would scream ‘I am Maximus Decimus Meridius’ and I would be transported to a more credible film based on historic accounts.  Even if Kevin Costner released a sequel to Water World, Noah would still be deserving of the title worst film of 2014.

6 reasons to see Divergent NOW!

Divergent is based on the best-selling book by American author Veronica Roth and is a high-energy action/drama set in a post apocalyptic world in which every human being must be placed into a particular clan and conform to the rules and morals of that clan to avoid any conflict that may stir another World War.  Despite the rigid rules of this new society and the brutal control of its rulers including the sinister Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet from Titanic), there are few whose personality tests which place them in clans, prove divergent - their characters do not conform to any of the existing clans.  Unfortunately for lead character Trice (Shailene Woodley from the Descendents) being a divergent means she will most likely be killed for her unique personality as the villainous Winslet goes to extremes, including mass murder, to rid society of anyone that is different.  What we get is a powerful film with an amazing performance by new star Woodley.  Here are 6 reasons to see the film now!

1. Shailene! Shailene! Shailene!  Most remember Shailene Woodley for her role as George Clooney's daughter in 'The Descendants' but in Divergent she transforms into a stunning lead actress who is surprisingly capable of handling the large scale fight sequences and physical demands of the lead role of Trice.  Take my word you will fall in love with her from the first scene.

2. Fans of the Hunger Games and other young adult adventure/drama films will be fully satiated with the high-energy action sequences and all the political intrigue of the post-apocalyptic world.

3. A break from zombies, werewolves and other assorted popular horror characters.  Learning from the giant flop that was 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones', Divergent stays true to its source material  and portrays a compelling story of a young woman who can't conform to a rigid society.  Added enjoyment includes the love story between Shailene and new British heart-throb Theo James which will satisfy fans of romantic/action pieces including Twilight Fans since despite not being vampires, Shailene and Theo are convincing as a couple that finds love despite the horrific world they share.

4. Amazing guest appearances.  Herds of your favourite popular character actors make appearances including Fitz himself, Tony Goldwyn, from 'Scandal' as Trice's father, cult hit phenomenon Maggie Q from Nikita and Mekhi Phifer.   Ashley Judd also plays a significant role as Trice's mother and does some pretty good action sequences reminiscent of her popular action movies; Oscar winner Kate Winslet from 'Titanic' brings a bizarre, sinister poise to the villain.

5. Amazing plot.  What I particularly liked about this film is the story at the heart of all the adrenaline driven action sequences.  The film is really a metaphor for those of us who have never felt 100% normal or fitted in with society's rules of what should and should not be done.  It's every religious persecution, sexual identity and feminist rights struggle wrapped up into a tour-de-force film.  It's amazing how Trice's character is portrayed as she is able to think differently and resolve trials in a way that no one else in the society can.  It's your childhood rebel fantasy come true!

6. Kate Winslet gets the butt-whooping she deserved since 1998.  For those of us who ever wanted revenge on Kate Winslet for not giving Jack any space on that piece of debris in 'Titanic', there is a brutal 'cat fight' between Shailene and Winslet.  Yes, Kate finally gets her nether regions kicked for her bad decisions in 'Titanic'.

See Divergent NOW.  Well worth the money.

12 Reasons to watch 300 Rise of the Empire now (I mean NOW)

12 Reasons to watch 300 Rise of the Empire now (I mean NOW)

List by T. Austin

12. SUPERIOR PLOT. It's not your usual sequel.  I would describe it as more of a parallel story as the new plot takes place during the same period as the Battle of Thermopylae featured in the first film.  This makes for a more heightened plot and adds more insight into the tragic death of King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans in the original film.

11. ARTEMISIA!  This should probably be reason number one but I can't wait to get into how amazing Eva Green is as the 'bad-ass' villain Artemisia.  This is a performance you have to see to believe as Artemisia weeds down anything with testicles.  Eva Green is best known as the Bond Girl in Casino Royale but in 300 her performance is so good her character is best described as an 'epic bitch'.

10. Fans of the current popular 'sword and scandal' shows including Game of Thrones and Spartacus will find much enjoyment here as 300 ups the large-scale epic fighting with improved CGI battle sequences.

9. Speaking of Spartacus, fans of that show will be elated at the special appearance by the Doctore himself (Peter Mensah) who finds a young Artemisia, trains her to become a killer and is more or less responsible for her becoming an 'epic bitch'.

8. Fans of the gritty violence in the original 300 will salivate at the heightened blood bath and down-right gruesome action sequences.  I'm not a fan of this but it presents realistic imagery of the brutality of war.

7. Ladies will rejoice at the return of the 'brief' clad Spartans with their digital abdominal muscles as the writers have continued to ignore historical facts to make the heroes seem more like 'He-Man' than actual historic  figures.   Xerxes as well seems to be allergic to wearing clothes.

6. The sequel gives us more insight into probably the most intimidating movie villain in years; Xerxes' entire back story including his ascension to the throne as the 'God-King' is a pivotal part of the new plot.

5. Fans of the fantasy genre will find much enjoyment as the series continues to mix actual history with fantasy elements including Xerxes deliciously over-the-top transformation from man to 'God King', his strange beast-like pets and even sea monsters which provide an added threat during the climatic battles.

(No Medusa is not in the film; but doesn't Rihanna look awesome in this image?  I digress)

4. While the original film is best known for its violence than its writing, the sequel improves with hilarious one liners mostly delivered by Artemisia during her 'power tantrums'.  The best line comes at the end when she coos to the hero 'you fight HARDER than you ....' (You get the idea).

3. Which brings me to one of the most entertaining scenes; the 'love-making' scene between Artemisia and new hero Themosticles (played by Sullivan Stapleton) is one of the most bizarre, yet entertaining, sex scenes I've ever seen.  I can't describe it but the comedy involved will have viewers rolling in the aisles.

2. For ladies who are not fans of violent films you can't afford to miss this as Artemisia provides enough 'female empowerment' to make you forget she's slaughtering every man in her sight. And for those who have ever questioned how a woman can be dominant in a submissive role during a 'love making' scene you have to see this for yourself.

1. And the number one reason to see the new 300 is for its broad, epic, large scale computer generated special effects which significantly improves on the awesome war set pieces of the original.  The action sequences are 'jaw dropping', the CGI locations are grandiose and recall the gigantic scale of old Hollywood.  The battle has moved from the fields in the original to the foreboding seas as the Persians and Greeks engage in open combat on devilish-looking barges and ships.  This makes for a truly compelling special effects extravaganza which is all complemented by a tour-de-force performance by Eva Green as Artemisia.  SEE IT NOW.

10 Reasons to Hate Scandal

10 Reasons to Hate Scandal

List by T. Austin

10. Tony Goldwyn was much more convincing as the voice of Tarzan in the Disney movie than the President of the United States.

9. Kerry Washington's amazing wardrobe just makes you think of how cheap your Mother's Day present was.

8. Everyone is always yelling at each other.

7. Olivia's dad is kinda creepy and reminds you of the dude that played Candy Man (plus he spits when he's really angry).

6. Tony Goldwyn killed Patrick Swayze in Ghost and we haven't quite forgiven him for that. (Yes that was Fitz in Ghost trying to get into Demi Moore's unmentionables)

5. Tony Goldwyn tried to kill Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost and we haven't quite forgiven him for that either. Love you Whoopi!

4. No one in the show is a vampire or werewolf.  That's just weird.  (Imagine Mellie as an enraged werewolf - EPIC!)

3. There are little or no explosions in most episodes. Like zero.

2. Kerry Washington is sooo good you'd rather see her talent be used in a reboot of Wonder Woman.

1. And the number 1 reason to hate Scandal is...there is little chance you'll see a zombie in any episode. Yeah even Mellie is supposed to be alive.  Now that's just wrong.
